How Medigap works
Original Medicare covers a lot, and it still leaves you with some costs, like deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. A Medicare Supplement policy, also called Medigap, can help pay some of those costs.
Medigap works alongside Original Medicare. It cannot be used with a Medicare Advantage plan, and it does not include prescription drug coverage, so many people pair it with a Part D plan.
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months and starts the first month you are 65 or older and have Part B. During that window, an insurance company cannot turn you down because of your health.
In California, people who already have a Medigap policy also get a 60-day window each year, starting on their birthday, to switch to a policy with the same or fewer benefits without health questions.
