DIME calculator

The DIME calculator

Debt, Income, Mortgage and Education. Add the four together for an estimate of the life insurance your family may need. Type a number or drag the slider, and the total keeps up.

Your DIME numbers

This calculator replaces three years of income and sets aside $50,000 per child for education. It starts with example numbers, and nothing here is sent anywhere unless you choose to send it.

How it adds up

Why each of the four is in there

D is for debt. Credit cards, car loans and personal loans your family would otherwise have to pay. The mortgage gets its own line.

I is for income. This calculator uses three years. The idea is time: time for your family to work out what happens next without rushing.

M is for mortgage. What it takes to pay off your home, so your family can stay in it.

E is for education. This calculator sets aside $50,000 per child. Three children is $150,000.

Add the four together and you have an estimate with a reason behind every part of it. From there, compare term life, whole life and final expense coverage for a death benefit; mortgage protection for the home; disability income coverage for an eligible loss of earnings; and long-term care coverage for qualifying care needs.

Questions

About the calculator

No. It estimates how much coverage you may need. What coverage costs depends on your age, your health, the type of policy and other factors.

It is this calculator’s starting assumption, meant to give your family time to adjust. Your own number may be higher or lower.

Your numbers are not sent anywhere. While this browser tab is open, your estimate is kept in the tab, so it can be added to a call-back request if you choose to send one.
